There have been 219 verified supercentenarians from Japan.[1] As of 16 February 2012, there are 24 verified living supercentenarians, 4 pending, and 3 unverified in Japan, the oldest of whom is Jiroemon Kimura age 114 years, 326 days. The oldest person ever from Japan Tane Ikai, who died in 1995 aged 116 years 175 days.

Denzo Ishizaki (石崎 伝蔵 Ishizaki Denzō , October 20, 1886 – April 29, 1999) was for a short time Japan's oldest person and the world's oldest man. He lived in Ibaraki Prefecture. Ishizaki became the world's oldest recognized man following the death of American Walter Richardson on December 25, 1998, who was 113. He became Japan's oldest person following the death of Yasu Akino on February 12, 1999, who was also 113. He is also the only man to have been Japan's oldest person. Ishizaki died at the age of 112 years 191 days. As world's oldest man, he was succeeded in title by then Spanish 111-year-old Antonio Urrea-Hernández, and, as Japan's oldest person, Ishizaki was succeeded by another 111-year-old, Kamato Hongo.

Ura Koyama (小山 ウラ Koyama Ura, August 30, 1890 – April 5, 2005) of Iizuka became the oldest person in Japan upon the death of Mitoyo Kawate in November 2003. In early December 2004, she became the world's fourth oldest person. On April 5, 2005, she died of pneumonia at a hospital in Iizuka.[63]
Tsuneyo Toyonaga (豊永 常代 Toyonaga Tsuneyo , May 21, 1894 – February 22, 2008)[64] was a Japanese supercentenarian who was the oldest living person in Japan from the death of Shitsu Nakano on August 19, 2007 until Toyonaga's death. She was the fifth-oldest living person in the world following the November 14, 2007 death of fellow 113-year-old Bertha Fry.[1] At the time of her death she was one of the 90 longest lived people ever.
Before her death, Toyonaga was living in the town of Tano in the Kōchi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku.[65]
Kaku Yamanaka (山中 かく Yamanaka Kaku , December 11, 1894 – April 5, 2008) was a Japanese supercentenarian. She died at the age of 113 years, 116 days. At the time of her death, Yamanaka was the sixth-oldest living person in the world, and the oldest person in Japan.[66] She lived her last years at a nursing home in Yatomi, Aichi Prefecture.[66][67]
